Learn more about the top reasons to join us:Position Overview:Reporting to the Utility Engineer, as the Planning and Design Technologist I you will be responsible for drafting natural gas plans and conducting locates. You will be responsible for planning, designing, completing, and providing customer service for projects under your charge. Field inspections including quality assurance/quality control and records control are amongst your duties. You will also be responsible for developing and managing data from maintenance programs; and providing engineering related assistance to Utilities operations staff, consultants, and the public.Responsibilities:
- Conducts gas and water locates.
- Initiates gas main and service projects, including data entry into Cityworks and processing gas service applications.
- Attends site visits and meetings with customers to determine gas main and service project requirements and ensure consistency with standards.
- Creates and revises drafts required by the department including the production of gas and water construction drawings using computer aided drafting techniques.
- Inspects gas pipeline during construction, including measuring installed work, preparing as-built drawings, preparing progress reports, coordinating with contractor and stockroom, and preparing cut sheets for pavement repairs.
- Performs records management duties (record changes, assigning and maintaining attribute information, drawing review and filing, etc.).
- Responds to public and internal gas and water information requests.
- Assists with maintenance programs.
- Must be willing to work outdoors for extended periods at any time of year.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
Requirements:
- Minimum 3-year degree or diploma in a related field, including courses in computer-aided drafting (e.g., CAD).
- Minimum 1 year of related experience.
- Eligible for membership in the Ontario Association of Certified Engineering Technicians and Technologists (OACETT).
- Preference will be given to candidates that hold a CET designation from OACETT.
- Valid Class “G” driver’s license in good standing and use of a personal vehicle for city business.
- Ability to support and project values compatible with the organization and to participate as an effective team member.
- Must successfully complete required educational and experiential requirements as it relates to the Planning & Design Technologist position.
- Communication and human relations skills in order to liaise with customers and contractors.
- Demonstrated experience with drafting, data collection and analysis activities.
- Demonstrated knowledge in the fundamental engineering concepts related to design and construction processes and procedures.
- Proven knowledge of CSA Z662 Code, relevant procedures, practices, and standards, as well as the Occupational Health and Safety Act.
- Proven ability to read, understand, and interpret drawings.
- Proven proficiency in the use Microsoft Word, Excel, On-Point, AutoCAD.
- Must be willing to work on-call on a rotational basis.
- Preference will be given to candidates with GIS and CityWorks experience.
- Preference will be given to candidates that can perform natural gas and water pipe locates.
- Preference will be given to candidates that hold a valid Gas Pipeline Inspector Certificate.
- Must provide Drivers Abstract at your own expense as a condition of employment.
- Must be reliable with a good attitude and employment record.
