Job Title: Superintendent

Location: Whitehorse, YT

Job Description: This competition is to fill 1 full-time, permanent position working 75 hours biweekly.Yukon First Nations are an important partner in the governance of the territory. First Nations’ traditional territories cover almost all the land in Yukon. Our territory is home to a total of 14 distinct First Nations communities. In this endeavor, we humbly recognize and honor the ancestral wisdom of Yukon’s original peoples and the expanse of their Traditional Territories that grace the Yukon landscape.Our department plays a crucial role in delivering a wide range of services and supports that span from early learning to adult education and encompass K-12 schooling. Our schools provide experiential learning programs with a First Nations lens. Our work is guided by implementing actions that embrace diversity, equity, and inclusion.The Superintendent position reports to the Assistant Deputy Minister and is responsible to operational oversight of schools.   • Foster a safe, respectful, and welcoming learning environment across schools.
  • Promote a shared responsibility for student success and continuous improvement within school communities.
  • Ensure the safety of students in school programs and on transportation services.
  • Educational Leadership:
  • Provide leadership in directing school operations and strategically allocating resources.
  • Ensure students meet the educational standards set by the Minister and encourage innovative pedagogical practices.
  • Collaborate with First Nations, Métis, Inuit, and other community stakeholders to enhance Indigenous programming within schools.
  • Support principals and school leaders to improve educational practices and foster innovation.
  • People and Culture:
  • Align all employees to the department’s vision and priorities.
  • Develop leadership skills and career development opportunities for staff.
  • Promote a culture of inclusion across the education system.
  • Community Relations:
  • Build and maintain effective partnerships with parents, communities, municipal leaders, and external stakeholders.
  • Ensure open, transparent, and positive communications with internal and external audiences.
  • Actively seek and incorporate feedback from relevant sources to improve services and responsiveness.
  • Visionary Leadership and Professional Learning:
  • Engage in ongoing professional learning and reflection to enhance leadership, teaching, and learning.
  • Collaborate with government departments and stakeholders to implement a vision for student success.
  • Establish a learning culture that promotes continuous improvement, critical reflection on practice, and shared responsibility for student outcomes.

Essential Qualifications:

  • Eligibility for a Yukon Teaching Certificate.
  • A master’s degree in education or a related field.
  • Significant educational leadership experience, ideally at both the school and system levels.
  • Significant experience in administration, human relations, staff development and strategic planning
  • Experience managing the implementation of educational programs and change initiatives.

Candidates with an equivalent combination of post-secondary education and relevant experience may be equally considered.Desired knowledge, skills and suitability

Additional informationThis is a designated position within the Yukon public service which requires the following condition(s) of employment:

  • Class 5 driver’s licence or equivalent
  • Security clearance, including Vulnerable Sector Check

Job Requirement(s):

  • Regular travel in and out of the territory, as well as evening and weekend meetings.
