Reporting to the Shelter Manager, the Shelter Team Lead oversees all building operations and shift activities. This position is responsible for leading and mentoring a team of Housing Focused Shelter Workers, ensuring the effective execution of daily operations, and providing person-centered support to guests. Through daily crisis intervention, conflict resolution, and coaching conversations, you will foster a supportive environment for both guests and staff, embodying The Mustard Seed’s mission to build hope and well-being for vulnerable individuals through Jesus’ love.About Us: The Mustard Seed is a humanitarian organization whose vision is to build community, grow hope and support change. The Mustard Seed combats the root causes of poverty throughout Alberta and works to create positive, lasting change in the lives of those we serve. The Mustard Seed provides basic services – food, clothing, and shelter, and is now increasing our support services – health & wellness centers, education, and employment coaching, as well as permanent supportive housing to those living in poverty within Alberta, British Columbia, and Saskatchewan.Work Schedule Options:

  • Full-Time and Permanent Part-Time positions available

Shifts Available:

  • Saturday & Sunday Mornings: 7:30am-3:30pm
  • Afternoons: 3:30pm-11:30pm
  • Overnights: 11:30pm-7:30am

Reporting To: Shelter Manager
Location: Medicine Hat, AB

  • Ensure the shelter provides a warm, safe, and clean space for respite, prioritizing the dignity and well-being of community participants.
  • Maintain professional boundaries while fostering an atmosphere of respect and support for all community members.
  • Collaborate with the Shelter Manager to address operational, staffing, and programmatic concerns effectively.
  • Enforce shelter rules, expectations, and suspensions when necessary, balancing accountability with compassion.
  • Partner with the Restoration Committee to facilitate re-entry processes and reconciliatory conversations for suspended community participants.
  • Lead, train, and mentor employees and volunteers, providing guidance and support to ensure a high standard of service delivery.
  • Oversee the development of trusted relationships between staff and community participants, reinforcing The Mustard Seed’s mission and values.
  • Collaborate with Housing Focused Shelter Workers to support case management activities and ensure alignment with participants’ housing goals.
  • Monitor and ensure Housing Focused Shelter Workers complete their tasks and responsibilities with consistency and professionalism.
  • Provide proactive leadership by taking initiative, applying critical thinking, and addressing staff concerns and participant issues promptly.
  • Offer regular feedback, coaching, and encouragement to Housing Focused Shelter Workers to promote professional growth and team morale.
  • Facilitate team meetings, critical incident debriefs, and daily pre-shift briefings to ensure clear communication and operational readiness.
  • Complete and submit daily reports, ensure timely delivery of incident reports, and compile and report program statistics accurately.
  • Participate in staff training sessions, team meetings, and regular one-on-one check-ins with the Shelter Manager.
  • Uphold strict confidentiality standards, ensuring all client records and information are securely maintained and kept up to date.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS AND SKILLS

  • Diploma or certificate in Human Services, Social Work, or a related field is preferred.
  • Strong passion for supporting vulnerable populations, particularly individuals experiencing homelessness.
  • Minimum of 2 years of frontline experience in the social services sector, working directly with at-risk individuals.
  • Comprehensive knowledge and experience addressing mental health issues and substance use disorder.
  • Exceptional organizational and time management skills, with the ability to prioritize tasks effectively in a fast-paced environment.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Strong conflict resolution abilities.
  • Demonstrated problem-solving skills with a proactive and resourceful approach.
  • Proven leadership abilities, including the capability to provide constructive feedback and mentor team members.
  • Self-motivated and able to work both independently and collaboratively within a cross-functional team.
  • Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to build and maintain trusting relationships with colleagues, community members, and external partners.
  • High level of professionalism, integrity, discretion, and tact, especially when handling sensitive and confidential information.
  • Valid certifications in Standard First Aid and Non-Violent Crisis Intervention are required.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications (Outlook, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint).

WORKING CONDITIONS

  • This position involves working in a challenging and potentially volatile environment where you may encounter racial slurs, name-calling, and derogatory comments from community members. It requires resilience, conflict resolution skills, and the ability to maintain professionalism and composure in the face of adversity. Training and support will be provided to ensure your safety and well-being.
  • Moderate amounts of walking, climbing, standing, sitting, lifting, and carrying may be required.
  • The position often involves a fast-paced environment and requires mental effort to analyze information and problem-solve.
  • Varied mental and emotional effort, including responding appropriately to intense situations and providing conflict resolution as necessary.
  • This position requires the training in usage of a two-way radio communications, MS Office based computer programming, HMIS database system, FDARP, FOIP, First Aid, NVCI, and Safe Talk.
  • This position may be required to work out of other TMS locations based on the needs and direction of TMS.

  • Must have legal authorization to work in Canada on a full-time basis for anyone other than current employer.
  • This position requires the use of a company vehicle. Candidate must have and maintain valid driver’s licence and will need to consent to a driver’s abstract request.
