This crucial role involves applying technical expertise to evaluate potential process safety risks and prevent adverse impacts and incidents. This team member collaborates closely with other engineering disciplines to enhance equipment availability, prevent containment losses, reduce operational disruptions and shutdowns, and manage costs effectively.Shell Scotford currently operates under a Hybrid work model, where some flexibility to work from home is available. Please note, however, that this is a hands-on role so a minimum of 3 days/week on site is required.Accountabilities:Provide long term and ad-hoc support on process safety issues and incidents, identify potential hazards and prevent loss of process containmentProvide expertise in equipment safeguarding, pumps, tanks, pressure vesselsPerform equipment overpressure relief calculations, relief scenario development, PRV/PVSV selection and working knowledge of design of flare systems.Support and assure the Site risk management program and site Management of Change program (MOC)Safeguarding of operations, maintenance, troubleshooting, root cause analysis, process optimization and implementation of changes to ensure integrity and improve reliabilityFacilitate PHAs (Process hazard Analysis), Bowties, HEMP (Hazard & Effect Management Process), LOPA (Layer of Protection Analysis) analysis, and other risk studiesFacilitate Hazard Identification and provide technical assurance as part of the MOC processEnsure proper completion of PHA, Process Safety, and HAZOP (Hazard and Operability Analysis) action items are done in a timely mannerDevelop and manage Line of defense process safety assurance programs, conduct health checks and process effectiveness reviewsAct as subject matter expert for process safety metrics, monitor process safety metrics and provide analysis to identify gaps to potentialEnsures process safety information such as safeguarding manuals are up to date. Apply RAM to Evaluate Potential Risks from Release of a Hazard to support incident reportingProvide technical guidance for specialty procedures for activities such as decontamination, O2 freeing, cool downs/warmups, dry outs catalyst and furnace decokeIdentify and model fire and explosion hazards using computer programs such as Fire Release Explosion and Dispersion (FRED) modelsReview Turnarounds and Major Maintenance scope and participates in review and challenge processesProvide Process Safety, Hazard recognition, and barrier thinking trainings to the operating staff to improve process safety competency and culture; craft training materials such as operating manuals or process overviewsManage process safety assurance to validate effective process safety systems are being implemented and maintained across all production unitsEstimation of leak amounts from Loss of Primary Containment (LOPCs)Provide assurance and guidance on Statement of Fitness-Pre-start-up Safety (SoF-PSSRs) for plant changes, major maintenance, turnarounds, and projectsRequirements:Must have legal authorization to work in Canada on a full-time basis for anyone other than current employerBachelor’s degree in Chemical, Mechanical Engineering, or any related engineering disciplineAPEGA registered with Professional Engineering designationMinimum of 6 years’ experience in Oil and Gas industry is desirableDeep understanding of Relief System and sizing is requiredKnowledge of relevant codes and standards, including API 520/521, API 537, API 754, ASME Sec VIIIFamiliarity with process simulation software – Unisym, Hysis, and FlarenetFamiliarity with dispersion modeling software such as FRED or PHASTFamiliarity with HAZOP and risk management tools such as Sphera and PHAProStrong facilitation skillset and able to manage multiple activitiesIf you don’t see yourself fully reflected in every job requirement listed in the posting above, we still encourage you to reach out and apply.
