Job Description: Are you interested in gathering, processing, and analyzing data using statistical methods and spatial analysis to support urban form and demographics research in the Planning and Environment Services branch at the City of Edmonton? If so, read on!Whether you’re analyzing data, creating reports or researching responses to inquiries, you’ll play a key role in monitoring growth and providing analytics to support evidence-based decision making. As a Planning Technician, you will work as part of a multidisciplinary team under the supervision of the Senior Planner, to analyze, visualize, and present data for publications, City Council inquiries and reports. You will support a diverse range of urban planning analytics, using a wide range of indicators, data sources, and tools.What will you do?
- Assemble and analyze large, complex data sets in support of research projects related to land use, corporate performance measures, neighbourhood indicators, development and building permits, lot registration, lot servicing and other relevant information needs of the unit, section and branch and corporation
- Evaluate data sets for consistency, completeness, accuracy and reasonableness
- Perform data collection and management activities, including routine processing, documentation, storage, and validation
- Analyze data on land supply, subdivision activity, building permits and other indicators, using R, SQL, SAS and Excel among other GIS data analysis tools
- Write scripts to automate data processing and cleaning, and calculate indicators and metrics
- Oversee and undertake the provision of technical materials to support regular reporting through static and interactive products, Council reports and presentations, public and internal meetings, in alignment with corporate and department strategic documents and direction
- Evaluate and advise on new tools, technologies, and techniques to improve effectiveness of the unit’s work, seeking new and/or improved data sources and visualization techniques to advance the section’s analytical capabilities
- Related duties as required
Qualifications
- 2 year diploma in Urban or Regional Planning, Engineering, GIS, Architectural Technology or a related field from a recognized institute of technology
- 4 years of progressively responsible planning experience including planning research and analysis, creating graphic report content, and statistical analysis by identifying and using a variety of data sources and visualization technologies
- Knowledge of statistical and automation tools including SQL, R SAS, FME and Python
- Knowledge of GIS and graphics programs, including ESRI Suite (ArcGIS Pro), Adobe Indesign, Illustrator, PhotoShop, and other related programs such as Microstation, Tableau, Google Applications and Microsoft Office Suite
Assets:
- Eligibility for membership in Canadian Association of Certified Planning Technicians
Skills required for success:
- Demonstrated understanding of planning policies, procedures, and processes and the ability to effectively apply this knowledge to assignments
- Demonstrated project management skills, including ability to organize, plan and manage work and generally work independently
- Demonstrated ability to effectively prioritize multiple projects to meet deadlines
- Excellent communication, customer service and interpersonal skills including the ability to communicate verbally and in writing effectively with clarity and accuracy
Work Environment:
- Note: This position may be eligible for a hybrid work arrangement with the flexibility to work from both home and the worksite as per the Letter of Understanding between the City of Edmonton and Civic Service Union 52
- The weekly hours of work for this position are currently under review and may change at a future time. Any changes will be made in accordance with the City of Edmonton/Civic Service Union 52 collective agreement and the incumbent will be notified in advance
