  • Recruitment range: $87,035 – $95,971 starting salary determined by the PEA Collective Agreement.
  • Performance range: starting salary to max of $113,217 is available through annual performance increases

Job SummaryThe Observatory Systems Manager oversees and participates in the installation, implementation, administration, maintenance, ongoing status and performance monitoring and support of operating systems, networking systems, third party applications systems such as relational database management systems, caching systems, messaging systems including the hardware, software, and networking components at the ONC data centres, shore stations and cabled observatories. System responsibilities include conducting systems analysis and troubleshooting of the observatories, providing shore support during expeditions, cybersecurity of the observatories and data center assets, maintaining and life cycling data center and shore station equipment, design and development, completing systems integration, investigating hardware, software, data communications, and service innovations for user suitability. Management responsibilities include analyzing project objectives and scope, estimating costs and staffing requirements, developing project work plans, monitoring and directing activities of team members, working closely with other departments within Digital Operations to support team and user needs, working closely with Physical Operations to ensure seamless integration of instruments and physical assets to the observatories, and providing a high level of consulting and training services by maintaining current knowledge of new developments.The work is performed primarily at the University of Victoria Queenswood campus with some field work at the ONC shore and field stations.Systems analysts within the Systems Operations team rotate to provide 24 hours a day, seven days a week on-call support. The Systems manager is responsible for scheduling the on-call support and providing secondary technical support if needed.Job RequirementsThis position requires an undergraduate degree in computer science, computer engineering (or equivalent) plus minimum 8 years of experience in at least two of the following: database monitoring; Linux system administration, data storage, ethernet networking, RDBMSs.An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.Experience requirements:

  • Unix (Linux), system administration
  • Database experience including: basic administration of RDBMSs such as Oracle, MySQL and NoSQL database such as Cassandra
  • Apache web server installation, configuration and maintenance, including components such as Tomcat application server and OSGi modules
  • Basic Windows administration
  • Design and configuration of new hardware and software
  • Demonstrated administrative and organizational skills
  • Experience with financial/budget administration
  • Proven track record achieving project goals on time and produce deliverables of a high quality
  • Demonstrated leadership, supervisory skills in a team environment.

Knowledge requirements:

  • Installation and configuration of Linux hosts, physical and virtualFibre channel and SAN disk systems, software RAID implementation
  • Maintenance of development tools such as subversion and wiki
  • Knowledge of business continuity and disaster recovery procedures
  • Monitoring database systems
  • Network monitoring systems and SNMP
  • Messaging systems such as ActiveMQ
  • Copper and fibre-based networks, IP networking, VLAN and firewall usage, Cisco/Alcatel networking equipment installation and configuration
  • Knowledge of scripting languages such as the Bourne shell, Perl and/or Python
  • Cloud storage and cloud computing

In addition, this position requires:

  • Government of Canada Security Clearance Level II (Secret)
  • Valid BC class 5 driver’s licence
  • Willingness and ability to independently acquire new computing and other related skills
