The Office of Student Life’s Student Support Coordination team works to provide individualized and coordinated support planning and assistance for students experiencing complex support needs, multiple barriers and/or impacts from critical incidents. The Student Support Coordination team works with students who are navigating university systems as they experience academic and personal impacts. To develop the capacity of the institution to provide effective and student-centered responses to students and appropriate referrals, the Student Support program works with faculty and staff to provide consultation and guidance on best practices. We are dedicated to providing student support with consideration of the complex experiences, systemic challenges, barriers and marginalization that students may face and are committed to upholding the values of a trauma-informed, low barrier approach.Scope:
The Manager, Student support is responsible for the supervision of the Student Support Coordination team and associated functions. The Manager provides guidance to faculty and staff engaging with student support matters for all undergraduate and graduate students across the university. Specifically, the incumbent is responsible for:

  • Program Oversight: Oversee the effective operations of the Student Support Coordinator program and functions, including case management processes, procedures and stakeholder relations.
  • Supervision: Providing skilled and accessible supervision to the Student Support Coordination team including meaningful consultation and mentorship on best practices in case management, ethical practice considerations, scope of non-clinical supports, appropriate escalation of concerns around barriers and complex support needs of students.
  • (Reflective Practice & Debrief: Developing and fostering a culture of reflective practice for student support, including leadership in implementing and maintaining a framework for debrief, feedback and meaningful support as well as cultivating supportive relationships with staff team members.
  • Issue Management: Managing early intervention, responses and institutional crisis management processes applying consistent, student-centered and trauma informed practice considerations.
  • Complex Cases: Leading or guiding cases that present complex, high-risk student matters, including students who are experiencing significant distress and providing leadership on institutional crisis management if and when required; and
  • Consultation With Leadership: Providing expertise, strategic leadership and consultation for university leaders to develop the capacity of the institution to provide appropriate support responses to students.

This position requires strong leadership in addressing student support concerns, managing referrals, and crisis management. The Manager provides leadership and guidance to the Student Support Coordinator team, critical response services to students in distress, and liaises with senior management on complex issues. They are responsible for strategic leadership to the Student Support Coordinator Program and to foster a supportive university culture, collaborating with various campus partners and developing resources for student support. The Manager also acts as the Associate Director, Student Support in their absence, overseeing all related responsibilities and authorities. This includes case management, policy development, budget management, and handling critical incidents.Some on-call duties may be required as per the PEA Collective Agreement.Job RequirementsThis position requires a level of education, training, and experience equivalent to a graduate degree (or equivalent) in a related field (such as Social Work, Counselling, Child and Youth Care etc.) plus five (5) years of relevant leadership experience. An equivalent combination of education, training, and experience may be considered.Relevant Experience includes:

  • Experience with case management support work including supporting individuals navigating complex and impactful circumstances e.g. critical incidents, multiple and compounding barriers to accessing systems and processes, grief and loss, trauma, mental health and wellness circumstances.
  • Experience working with students or university aged individuals from diverse populations and with ability to consider the unique context, lived experiences, culture, and barriers that may influence a student’s engagement.
  • Experience with effectively triaging concerns in consideration of risk (including risk of violence towards self or others), support needs, capacity, and institutional liability.
  • Experience working effectively both independently and in a team environment, collaborating with a broad range of people to achieve goals and objectives.
  • Leadership experience that includes managing and supporting, resourcing, guiding and coaching a diverse team of professionals with different professional designations and levels of experience.
  • Experience making independent decisions, where appropriate, to determine operational responses, administer the relevant policy, and guide the work of a team.
  • Experience demonstrating strong interpersonal and communication skills with an ability to act with a high level of confidentiality and professionalism, to deal with sensitive issues with tact, diplomacy, consistency and compassion.
  • Experience working and leading a team in an environment that requires the ability to balance and manage multiple competing priorities involving complex, sensitive, and high-profile topics.
  • Experience working with highly confidential personal information within privacy legislation and policies.

Knowledge and Skills:

  • Demonstrated knowledge of clinical and non-clinical boundaries, impacts of trauma, case management best practices and human rights considerations.
  • Understanding of trauma-informed practices related to critical incident support, psychosocial impacts, consultation, triage, and support.
  • Sound knowledge of systemic racism, intersectionality, impacts of colonization and contemporary student needs and issues, including the particular needs of students from marginalized an under-represented groups (including students with disabilities, 2SLGBTQ+, racialized students, Indigenous, religious minorities, international students).
  • Proven personal strategies and approaches to leadership, to uphold responsibilities in a dynamic environment while managing stress and ensuring personal and professional well-being.
  • Demonstration of sound judgment and assessment of risks and liability issues.
  • Willingness to maintain a knowledge of current and emerging trends in higher education as it pertains to student support, development and success.
  • Understanding of programs and services related to mental health, wellness, sexualized violence, domestic violence, emergency housing and food security, legal and financial aid, crisis.
  • Ability to work in an unpredictable setting with complex, sensitive and high-profile topics.
  • Excellent organizational, analytical, critical thinking, and written/oral communications skills.

The following are considered to be assets:

  • Training in self-directed violence and suicide prevention, threat, violence and risk assessment; and privacy and records management.
  • Training and experience in adult education and professional development.
  • Skill and experience in policy-based environments, data collection and analysis and statistical reporting.
