Job Description: Your Opportunity:The Lead Hand of the HVAC Team consisting of HVAC Technician and Maintenance III positions reports to the Manager of Engineering Services within Facilities Maintenance and Engineering at the University of Alberta Hospitals (UAH) site. This role involves maintaining eight facilities, encompassing over 650,000 square meters of clinical and mechanical space, including Acute Care, Laboratory, Research, Commercial, Institutional, and Industrial equipment. The diverse range of equipment types requires extensive experience and advanced technical expertise in the trade. A thorough understanding of Architectural, Mechanical, HVAC, Electrical, and their integration into the construction and operation of healthcare infrastructure is essential. The Lead Hand is responsible for guiding the HVAC team in monitoring, maintaining, repairing, and operating the UAH site’s infrastructure. Key responsibilities include acting as a resource for daily work assignments, regularly meeting with management and team designates to address and resolve backlog issues, reviewing and assisting with shutdown Work request arrangements, continuous training of team members and new HVAC Technician staff. The role also involves ensuring that policy and procedural updates are effectively communicated to the team, maintaining accurate records, conducting equipment and building system inspections, and participating in maintenance upgrade initiatives. Additionally, the Lead Hand oversees the scheduling and management of both demand and preventative eFacilities maintenance work orders. In collaboration with a multidisciplinary team of Tradespeople, Maintenance Workers, and Clinical staff, the incumbent’s scope of work encompasses all duties associated with the Lead Hand role while also performing the responsibilities of an HVAC Technician role. This role is available to the Zone.Description:As a Lead Hand, you will be responsible for providing functional supervision to a moderately sized group of similar journeyperson trade staff. In addition to functional supervision, you will perform a wide variety of journeyperson level trade duties associated with maintaining, renovating, repairing and construction in accordance with AHS standards and practices. You will assign work of journeyperson and supervise staff and perform ongoing maintenance work in an area of assigned trade or related responsibility. In addition, you will provide health and safety training and orientation and ensure compliance.

Required Qualifications:Completion of an accredited Journeyperson Certificate in trades from Alberta Apprenticeship and Industry Training. Additional Required Qualifications:Required experience in analyzing performance of air handling systems, analyzing load comparison, impact of system on the building, airflow monitoring devices and air balancing. Intrinsic knowledge of troubleshooting BMS controls, pneumatic controls, VAV boxes, Phoenix valves, AccuValves, control valves, air filtration, humidification, and hydronic systems, implementing preventive maintenance schedules, documentation, prepare feasibility, cost estimates, reports, and ordering supplies. Experience with recommending design, replacement, modification of HVAC systems on new projects. Must be thoroughly familiar with tools and equipment used in the trade. Required understanding of Microsoft Office programs including Outlook, Word, and Excel. Requires the ability to work independently and effectively in an interdisciplinary setting and maintain high confidentiality, detail-oriented, establish priorities, respond to requests promptly and meet deadlines. Proven reliability and dependability with no physical limitations concerning sitting, kneeling, crawling, squatting, standing, walking, and working at heights. Demonstrated self-direction, adaptability, and flexibility are required while working in a fast-paced, multi-faceted environment, responding to changing demands and ability to organize and prioritize workload. Must meet all organizational policy requirements for employment. Excellent verbal and written communication skills. Preferred Qualifications:Minimum 5 years’ experience in an active acute care hospital required. Minimum 5 years of technician experience as a ticketed HVAC technician with HVACR Technician Certificate or Building Environmental Systems Technology Diploma. Knowledgeable of CSA Z317.2, ASHRAE 170, Health Care facility Infection Prevention Control, and work safety regulations.
