Job Title: Int. Controls Engineer

Location: Airdrie, AB

Job Description: Description :Duties and Responsibilities

  • Assists in the development and design of basic, detailed, and conceptual engineering packages: DCS/PLC system design
  • Produces Instrumentation-related engineering deliverables, i.e. instrument indexes, installation details, datasheets, material requisitions, tender adjudication, evaluation of alternatives and selection of instruments, document control logs, bill of materials, and instrument change approvals
  • Produces Control System-related engineering deliverables, i.e. logic drawings, block diagrams, control system layouts, control panel design, wiring details, I/O assignment, control system hardware selection, loops assignment drawings, HMI, control system topology, and control narrative
  • Supports Process/Project Engineers in preparing Control Narrative and S/D matrix
  • Generates technical bid evaluations
  • Reviews vendor quotations
  • Generates Bill of Material (BOM)
  • Reads and understands P&IDs, line lists, piping material specification, and electrical drawings and specifications
  • Ensures compliance with government standards and client specifications
  • Views instruments, control panels, and installations in the yard or shop
  • Advises on proper installation of instruments, control panels, and installations
  • Attends Factory Acceptance Tests (FAT) and Customer Acceptance Tests (CAT)
  • Attends project progress meetings
  • Tracks time to jobs
  • Works closely with peers, senior control engineers, multidisciplinary engineers, designers, drafters, and programmers
  • Programs PLC, HMI, SCADA, DCS, and RTU for the oil and gas industry
  • Commissions controls systems
  • Tests electrical and instrumentation equipment
  • Reviews/Modifies electrical schematics.
  • Ensures each project meets contract scope of supply and design specifications
  • Conducts FAT/SAT on oil and gas equipment
  • Works with engineers to create control philosophies for oil and gas equipment
  • Travels, domestically and internationally, to assist in the commissioning and start-up

of oil and gas equipmentPrerequisitesEducation

  • A recognized diploma in Electrical/Instrumentation Engineering Technology
  • A degree in Electrical/Instrumentation Engineering or a two-year diploma in Electrical/Instrumentation Engineering Technology
  • Eng or ASET Certification

Experience

  • Experience in Instrumentation and Control Systems in the oil and gas or petrochemical industry is an asset
  • The following experience is an asset:
  • Programming PLC/DCS/HMI control systems
  • Programming Allen Bradley Factory Talk ME/SE and RS Logix 5000/500
  • P&ID’s, Cause and Effect, Shutdown Keys
  • Reviewing and modifying electrical schematics
  • Calibrating and testing instrumentation
  • Experience in PLC System (preferably Allen-Bradley ControlLogix)

Other

  • Knowledge of Canadian Electrical Code
  • Familiarity with Microsoft Office suite of programs, Windows Operating Systems, AutoCAD Drawing Viewer, Adobe Acrobat Reader, Units Converter
  • Must be willing and able to travel, domestically and internationally, up to 30% of the time

  • Assists technologists, engineers, and others with control system questions
  • Viewing instruments and control system panels in the yard and shop and resolving issues
  • Works as a team member to assist in developing standards and refining stock plant standards
  • Answers interdepartmental requests and queries
  • Regular communication with Electrical, Project, Purchasing, and Expediting
  • Actively participates in monthly progress meetings
  • Work independently and as part of a team to achieve departmental goals

  • Required to attend meetings and liaise with senior, multidisciplinary professionals
  • Confers with shop and departmental personnel while gathering information
  • May be required to prepare internal reports

  • May be required to visit client site during commissioning and start-up

Work EnvironmentSpecific Work Conditions

  • The work is performed in an office setting and requires the need to deal with a diversity of people when responding to interdepartmental inquiries and assisting with instrumentation issues, responding to interdepartmental requests, and liaising with Purchasing and vendors
  • Coping with frequent interruption and changing priorities
  • Required to attend meetings at other buildings
  • Occasional project site visits, often with little notice

Physical Requirements

  • Requires ability to sit at a workstation for extended periods using a computer, reading manuals, etc…
  • Occasional ability to lift, carry, and put away file boxes weighing up to 25 lbs
  • Manual dexterity for data input, paperwork and use of standard office equipment
  • Climbing, kneeling, crouching, and crawling when examining equipment
  • Must wear company-standard PPE when entering fabrication shops or visiting project sites. Project site PPE includes CSA approved steel toed boots and long pants
  • Walking on uneven ground is to be expected at project sites
