The non-regular faculty appointment will begin January 1, 2025 as co-instructor of EDUC 111, scheduled Tuesday and Thursday afternoons, 1:00 p.m. – 3:50 p.m., both in person and online synchronous instruction. Workload assignment may vary from 1-3 course offerings (sections), depending on how frequently EDUC 111 is scheduled each academic year.The Early Childhood Care and Education program stands in partnership with Early Childhood Educators of British Columbia (ECEBC) in promoting early childhood education as a profession. The department is committed to working towards the professionalization of early childhood educators in a universal, accessible, inclusive early childhood system that views early childhood education as the right of the child as a citizen. We are early childhood faculty, academics and researchers who are working with reconceptualist perspectives of early childhood education. We understand pedagogy as situated in the discipline of social science and the education of educators needs to be primarily steeped in educational and pedagogical matters. This education does not teach future educators how to apply knowledges and how to use methods that sustain the present system and current conditions. Rather, their education supports them on the challenging tasks of (1) understanding our current conditions, (2) imagining and worlding less oppressive, less violent, less destructive futures, and (3) enacting these possible futures through lively and experimental curricula with children and families.We work with children, families, and communities to co-create pedagogical spaces where all lives can flourish. The early childhood educator holds a disposition to listen, to be open, to challenge ourselves to think otherwise, to stay with the troubles and to live joyfully. We consider that in their pedagogical responsibilities, educators understand that children and families are differently situated in relation to local and global contexts, and live in complex interdependent relations with others (humans and more-than-human). Such understanding involves actively challenging normative notions of childhood and family composition. Educators not only make pedagogical decisions, but also create lively curricula that acknowledge and respond to children’s and families’ complex situational circumstances and interdependencies. Candidates will have the ability to engage in, or have a demonstrated record of research, teaching, and community engagement in reconceptualist early childhood care and education.We stand as allies of the BC Aboriginal Child Care Society working in all ways toward truth and reconciliation in ensuring our practice honours the Indigenous Early Learning and Care Framework and UNDRIP. Workload assignment may vary from 1-3 course offerings (sections), depending on how frequently EDUC 111 is scheduled in each academic year.In the academic terms in which there is course assignment, faculty are required to maintain regularly scheduled office hours on campus or online to be available to meet with students.Further, in the academic terms in which there is course assignment, participation in associated department activities as required within ancillary duties, including but not limited to events and meetings within the University community, ECCE committee work, and ECCE program development.What you’ll bringRequired Qualifications & ExperienceEducational Background:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Sign Language and/or Deaf Studies required;
  • Master’s degree in Sign Language Education required;
  • Provincial Instructor Diploma (BC) or equivalent certification preferred, or a commitment to obtain within two (2) years.
  • ASL Proficiency Interview (ASLPI) Level 4+ .

Pedagogical Expertise:

  • Advanced knowledge of subject matter, including contemporary pedagogical theories and practices.
  • More than 5 years experience teaching and assessing student learning using criterion-referenced frameworks.
  • Demonstrated ability to design practical, experiential, and project-based learning activities aligned with course outcomes.
  • Commitment to fostering critical thinking, creativity, and interdisciplinary learning in classroom settings.

Professional Competence and Experience:

  • Minimum of four (4) years of relevant professional and leadership experience.
  • Evidence of engagement with professional organizations or communities of practice in the discipline.
  • Active participation in organizations within the Deaf Community.
  • Strong communication, mentorship, and collaborative skills to foster positive relationships with students and colleagues.
