Job Title: Horticultural Technician (Seasonal)

Job Description: Position SummaryReporting to the Agriculture Services Coordinator, the Horticultural Technician is a seasonal field position primarily responsible for coordinating, implementing, and supporting further development of Yellowhead County’s horticultural management program. Other responsibilities may include but are not limited to performing weed and pest inspections on private and public lands in accordance with the Weed Control Act, Agricultural Pest Act and County policies.Position Responsibilities

• Safe operation of County vehicles and equipment: pickup trucks, ATV/UTVs and trailers;

• Plan, develop and provide technical advice to support the management of trees, landscape plantings and other landscape features on Yellowhead County owned lands and facilities, prioritizing beautification, sustainability, and resilience;

• Assist and support development of standardized arboricultural and horticultural work procedures for Yellowhead County;

• Investigate inquiries and complaints received from residents regarding tree and garden pests, maintenance/pruning and environmental conditions and provide recommendations and/or referrals as required;

• Conduct regulated tree and horticultural insect and disease inspections and monitoring on Yellowhead County owned lands and facilities;

• Assist in inspections of private, industrial, and municipal lands for weed infestation, advising landowners of weed problems and potential control methods;

• Complete weed inspection reports and detailed weed infestation maps as required;

• Assist with landscape labourer as required;

• Assist with extension events;

• Assist with agricultural pest inspections; and

• Complete all other duties as assigned.

Qualification, Knowledge, Skill & Ability Requirements

• Valid Class 5 (or equivalent) Driver’s License with fewer than 6 demerits;

• Completion of Defensive Driving;

• Completion of Grade 12 or equivalent;

• Must be 18 years of age or older;

• Valid Standard First Aid/CPR;

• Strong computer skills, verbal and written communication skills, and problem solving skills;

• Physical aptitude and ability to safely lift to a maximum of 50lbs;

• Related post-secondary education in horticulture, landscape management or related training considered an asset;

• Previous experience in a horticultural or related capacity considered an asset; and

• Landscape Pesticide Applicator certification or Authorized Assistant Certification, or ability to obtain certification considered an asset.

Working Environment

• 70% of work duties are conducted outdoors in all weather;

• 30% of work duties are administrative;

• Physical exertion and extensive walking required;

• Public contact may at times be confrontational;

• Potential interaction with domestic and/or wild animals; and

• Frequent and/or daily driving required.

The hourly wage is $23.62 to $25.71.
This is a seasonal position from approximately May 5, 2025 to August 29, 2025.
Position will be based in Wildwood.
