Job Description: Join the Canacre team in an exciting role working on leading edge infrastructure projects.We are technical experts in land, energy, and transportation development delivering accurate, innovative, and agile solutions to our partners. We provide land acquisition, geospatial mapping, data management, web-based GIS, community relations, land feasibility studies, and permitting services. Canacre’s clients include developers, large scale service providers, and government entities that are involved in the planning and development of energy projects, rights of way, resources, and infrastructure across Canada and the United States. Canacre works on large-scale wind and solar power projects, high-voltage transmission lines, pipeline projects, municipal roads projects, and groupings of cellular towers and rooftop antennas.The Environmental Monitor will primarily be responsible for conducting environmental monitoring and nest sweeps throughout the construction of a large-scale transmission line project. The Environmental Monitor will primarily be responsible for coordinating daily compliance activities and monitoring duties during construction activities.In addition, your role will be to:
- Cultivate a work environment committed to the health, safety and wellness of employees

- Conduct daily inspections of construction activities, and attend construction meetings
- Conduct nest sweeps as per Manitoba Hydro Nest Sweep Protocol
- Act as an environmental lead for the construction team
- Act as a resource to construction personnel and explain environmental regulations and how they are applied in the field
- Act as a point of contact for the Client, and Construction Contractor(s)
- Verify that environmentally sensitive areas are properly marked and flagged before work is done in the area
- Coordinate daily with construction team to discuss upcoming construction activities that are existing, potential problem areas and areas of concern
- Lead field kickoff meetings
- Coordinate with construction personnel to provide necessary information and facilitate regular communication among all parties
- Inspect areas of concern and make appropriate recommendations to construction personnel, as required
- Complete daily and monthly environmental reports, including nest sweep reports
- Maintain Valard’s Environmental Management System
- Complete Plan of the Day (POD) for the Project Management Team (PMT)
- Review field reports for consistency and accuracy
Qualifications:
- Post-secondary degree/diploma in Biology, Environmental Science, or related field of study
- Formal leadership training would be considered an asset
- Minimum 2 years professional experience as a biologist, environmental monitor, environmental planner, or related role
- Wildlife experience working in Manitoba i.e. at least one field season of demonstrated experience in nest sweeps or avian surveys
- Experience related to transmission line construction
- Experience related to pipeline, transmission line and renewable energy construction would be an asset.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills – data collection and interpretation, technical report writing, regulatory permit applications, client communications, etc.
- Excellent interpersonal and communications skills
- Strong analytical, problem-solving skills, prioritizing and decision-making skills
- Experience with ESRI products, such as ArcGIS Pro, Survey 123 and Field Maps would be an asset
- Ability to manage multiple responsibilities simultaneously with minimal supervision
- Detail-oriented, self-motivated and highly organized with strong problem-solving skills
- Ability to build strong, lasting relationships with key stakeholders.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Working knowledge of Microsoft Office
- Valid Driver’s License, with ability to maintain insurability under the company’s insurance carrier
