Job Description: The OpportunityThe Director, Music at Banff Centre is responsible for shaping the vision and execution of music programming, ensuring that participants receive mentorship from faculty and special guests to provide transformative, life-changing experiences. The role involves developing programs aligned with Banff Centre’s strategic goals, addressing the needs of both Canadian and international artists, and enhancing the global reach of Banff’s renowned music programs. The Director also collaborates with other arts disciplines and key leadership, including the Executive Director, Arts, to design both specialized and interdisciplinary programs that push creative boundaries and foster personal and professional growth for participants.The Director of Music will have one direct report, the Program Manager, Music, who is responsible for the advance planning and implementation of the programs and with whom the Director will collaborate closety. Each program will be assigned a Program Delivery Specialist to provide logistical, administrative and operational support throughout the program delivery cycle. A deep understanding of musical practice across genres, professional development, and the ability to attract exceptional faculty and high-quality applicants from across Canada and internationally are essential. The Director will balance artistic vision with the operational needs of a post-secondary institution, ensuring all programs align with Banff Centre’s values and strategic objectives, ultimately providing transformative learning experiences for all participants.Roles and ResponsibilitiesReporting to Executive Director, Arts below are some key accountabilities:Strategic Planning
- Conceives and articulates a compelling long-term vision for music at Banff Centre in support of the organization’s vision and mission.
- Works with the Executive Director, Arts to understand and implement the strategic goals and business objectives of Banff Centre as they relate to music and arts programming overall.
- Collaborates with other Banff Centre Arts Directors, and the Managing Director, Program Operations, to design and build a comprehensive Music program plan capable of delivering on the Director’s vision over a 3-year planning horizon.
Programming
- Designs an annual comprehensive and integrated program plan for Banff Centre Music including the identification of exceptional faculty from across Canada and internationally.
- Collaborates with colleagues to explore synergies through planning, program design and delivery of Arts programming and to develop and deliver innovative cross-disciplinary and/or cross-sectoral programming and research.
- Responsibility includes curriculum design with lead faculty, and the development of an integrated schedule working with lead faculty, program manager and other staff as relevant.
- Designs programs that are in alignment with our Strategic Plan; the provincial government’s Alberta 2030 post-secondary strategy, which focuses on training for jobs and work-based learning; and Canadian Heritage’s arts training objectives.
- Meets mission aligned enrollment targets (FLEs) and/or participant days in the arts program plan as set out by the Executive Director, Arts.
- Works with the Program Manager, Music, the Program Delivery Specialist and other relevant departments including Production and Programming Administration and Participant Resources to consider, and plan for, all anticipated logistical and operational implications of program designs.
- Develops an active public-facing component to all residencies, for example through concerts, masterclasses, and sound recordings.
- Leads diversity, equity, accessibility, and inclusion efforts to ensure programs are representative and inclusive to reflect the changing cultural, economic, and political developments that affect artist and audience needs across the Bow Valley, Canadian, and international landscapes.
Operational Management
- Leads a highly motivated, well-functioning, knowledgeable, and accountable team from across the relevant departments responsible for delivering the music programs.
- Works closely with Program Administration and Participant Services including the Admissions and Recruitment team, to ensure program materials are clear, comprehensive, accessible to potential applicants and are in adherence with deadline requirements.
- Liaises with the Recruitment team on identifying targeted outreach to encourage applications from artists who will be well aligned with the program goals.
- Together with the Program Manager, Music, liaises with Marketing and Communications on the launch and promotion of programs in adherence with deadline requirements.
- Assists the Development team in identifying new potential donors, sponsors, and in the development of donor proposals, government and other grant proposals
Financial Management
- Liaises with the Managing Director, Program Operations, and Finance Department as applicable, on program and department administration budget management and provides financial and other reporting as required.
- Oversees the Program Manager, Music in their day-to-day budget management responsibilities, ensuring they have access to all relevant information to maintain accuracy;
- Ensures the program plan is taking advantage of all available endowments.
Relationship Building
- Utilizes effective contacts within the music, education, and funding communities nationally and internationally to ensure the on-going relevance of Music programs to artists, while enhancing the value of these programming areas.
- Fosters relationships with donors to ensure good stewardship of past gifts and works with the Development department to secure new funding and ensure that stewardship reporting is completed in a timely fashion.
Leadership and Influence
- Provides creative and strategic leadership, vision and program direction and design to Music residencies, through experience and knowledge of music culture and community.

- Addresses issues and concerns impacting residency program participants, faculty, and staff while working with Participant Resources and Security Services.
