Position Title: Digital Fluency Specialist
Status: Full Time Support
Hours: 35 hours per week

Salary: FT Support Payband I (Start $39.34 – Max $45.59)About the Idea Lab at Humber:Located in the Longo Centre for Entrepreneurship, the Lakeshore Idea Lab is designed to support digital fluency skill development and media-rich assignments with bookable studio spaces, workshops, online resources, and student supports. Staffed by a librarian, support staff and workstudy students, Lakeshore Idea Lab studios are open to the entire Humber and University of Guelph-Humber community (students, faculty and staff). The studios include a video/photography studio as well as two audio and two fabrication studios, which house 3D printers, a laser cutter, vinyl cutter, sewing machines, sound booth, keyboards, and other audio, video and photography equipment. The Lakeshore Idea Lab is one of two Idea Labs at Humber, the other being at North campus. Both Idea Labs support Humber’s institutional learning outcomes, which incorporate digital fluency skills.About the Digital Fluency Specialist Role:You are passionate about working at Ontario’s largest polytechnic college; you thrive on improving productivity and quality that contribute to team success! If this sounds like you, keep reading:The Digital Fluency Specialist is responsible for:

  • Providing digital fluency services to faculty and students at the Library’s Lakeshore through digital assignment support via drop-ins and appointments; planning and delivering equipment demonstrations, and coordinating studio bookings
  • Coordinating the execution of key operations for the department such as day-to-day operations, scheduling, service delivery, marketing, purchasing, and student employee lead activities
  • Organizing events with other departments such as the Longo Centre for Entrepreneurship for digital fluency programming for entrepreneurs
  • Partnering with other departments to coordinate service delivery and/or service enhancements (e.g. IT, Lakeshore Principal’s Office)
  • Liaising with other departments to ensure smooth day-to-day operations (e.g. Cleaning, Facilities, Public Safety)
  • Facilitating project work as assigned by the library administrative team such as team training and introducing new technologies
  • Taking the initiative to suggest new projects, technologies, and/or workflows
  • Creating manuals, procedures, guidelines, videos etc. to assist staff and student employees in learning Idea Lab best practices
  • Troubleshooting issues as they arise (e.g. finding answers to challenging questions, talking to displeased students/faculty)
  • Creating schedules to ensure uninterrupted service; reviews timecards for accuracy prior to manager’s approval; monitors part-time and student staff budgets
  • Providing team training, both onboarding and throughout semester, for student, full-time, and part-time employees
  • Statistics collection and maintenance

If this sounds like you, keep reading:EducationTwo-year library technician diploma or equivalent education and training specializing in digital media technologies.Experience/Skills

  • Five years’ experience in a library and/or makerspace in a public service environment performing duties such as service delivery, and functional operational support. Experience providing in-person and virtual support to faculty, students, and staff. A strong interest in and demonstrated capability to develop technology skills is required. Must be able to learn new technologies quickly. Has proven strategies to support their learning of new technologies and equipment.
  • Highly developed analytical problem-solving skills are required as is the ability to analyse / solve problems and exercise judgment in resolving or troubleshooting complex technical problems.
  • Strong planning, coordinating, time management and organizational skills are required.
  • The incumbent demonstrates initiative, good judgement, and the ability to work independently in a diverse and fast-paced academic environment.
