Job Title: Commercial Auto Underwriting Manager

Job Description: An excellent opportunity exists in our Calgary Commercial Insurance branch for an engaging and experienced leader in Commercial Auto, with a real passion for developing talent, and with a focus on results and relationships. Reporting to the Commercial Lines AVP, as a leader in the branch you have the opportunity to create legacy and contribute to our employee investment and the customer experience.You will be responsible to provide leadership to a commercial team of talented Auto underwriters, on a large book of both IRCA and Fleet accounts. You will provide direction and mentorship to the team and individuals on account and portfolio management, you will monitor and measure results, collaborate on team and branch objectives and execute on various strategies. As the leader, you will also ensure that underwriting quality and service standards within the team meet and/or exceed corporate and branch objectives.Accountabilities:Does building a sales culture with our underwriting teams excite you?Do you thrive in an environment that focuses on strategic profitably?Do you believe that our brokers, our customers deserve our best every day, at every interaction?

  • You will model, mentor, teach and cultivate outstanding Broker relationships, making Aviva the market of choice to build mutually profitable partnerships.
  • You will be involved in the underwriting, assessment, and evaluation of new and existing commercial Auto accounts as necessary to assist the underwriting team. You motivate and guide the quality of underwriting. You conduct file reviews in accordance with governance standards as required.
  • You will work collaboratively with your peers, specialists and AVP to create excellence in all things we do and in alignment with Aviva strategies and guidelines.
  • You will help kill complexity by striving for continuous efficiency and improvement.
  • You will direct and motivate your staff by communicating clearly, and engaging them through regular team huddles and meetings.
  • You will strive for continuous professional growth by seeking learning and understanding, and sharing amongst reports and peers.
  • You will treat the Auto book like your own business and show keen interest, and a proactive approach to consistently identifying and measuring KPI’s, and provide regular insight to staff, peers and AVP to help identify deficiencies and opportunities on an ongoing basis.

Required Qualifications, Knowledge, and Skills:

  • Minimum 5 – 10 years’ progressive experience in commercial lines, with strong technical knowledge of Commercial Auto underwriting
  • Experience in commercial property and casualty underwriting an asset
  • Knowledge of competitor appetite an asset
  • Proven and demonstrable leadership abilities
  • Good business insights and real passion for relationship management
  • Excellent underwriting skills with knowledge of rating and risk selection.
  • Ability to develop strong business relationships, externally with brokers and internally with other areas of Aviva (e.g. NCU).
  • Strong organizational skills showing attention to detail, and the ability to meet deadlines.
  • Strong analytical, problem solving and decision-making skills.
  • Operational organization, including the ability to understand numbers and create metrics that measure outcomes.
  • Exceptional communication skills and confidence delivering sometimes unpopular messages
  • Experience with Aviva systems is an asset
  • Post-Secondary education or equivalent practical experience
  • Successful completion of the Insurance Institute FCIP certification, or in progress is ideal

What you’ll get:The salary band for this position ranges from $79,500 to $147,700.
