The County offers a competitive total rewards package including generous benefits and participation in the OMERS pension plan.In a Nutshell: Under the direction of the Manager, Transportation Planning and Development, the Traffic Engineer provides support in developing and implementing initiatives related to traffic safety and management initiatives. Coordinates data collection, management and analysis to prepare technical reports and development of practices and protocols. Provides support in corridor management initiatives and related studies.Day in The life:

  • Provide specialized transportation planning services and technical advice and expertise on transportation work programs
  • Plans for, coordinates and/or undertakes regional county wide corridor transportation planning studies
  • Assembles, analyses, researches motor vehicle collision data and formulates technical reports
  • Researches and remains current in transportation practices, technologies and trends. Recommends changes in County standards and practices where warranted
  • Manage Traffic Count and Collision databases
  • Prepares Terms of Reference for transportation studies; Reviews studies and provides written comments
  • Make technical decisions to ensure engineering designs are practical, functional and cost-effective. Anticipates problem areas and modifiy/guide design to minimize conflicts
  • Review drawings, specifications and test results, proficient in Microsoft Office, and traffic software applications
  • Evaluate and develop Transportation Demand Management (TDM) strategies considering the effects on safety and level of service
  • Perform other duties as assigned

Day in The life:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering or a related discipline from an accredited institution
  • Registration as a Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) in good standing with Professional Engineers Ontario (PEO)
  • Certification in traffic engineering or transportation planning (e.g., PTOE) is considered an asset
  • Minimum of 4 years of professional experience in traffic engineering, and transportation planning preferably in a municipal or public sector environment
  • Proven experience in traffic impact studies, transportation modeling, road safety audits, and/or signal optimization
  • Skill in project Management and the preparation of technical reports and presentations
  • In-depth knowledge of the Ontario Traffic Manual (OTM), Transportation Association of Canada (TAC) standards, and other relevant guidelines and legislation
  • Proficiency in traffic engineering and analysis software (e.g. Synchro, VISSIM, HCS, Street Light Data and TES)
  • Strong understanding of transportation systems, road design principles, and traffic control devices. Knowledge of commute trip reduction programs, ride-sharing programs, regional initiatives and funding opportunities
  • Strong communication skills, both written and verbal, with the ability to prepare and present technical reports and recommendations to various audiences, including council, the public, and other stakeholders
  • Valid Ontario Class G driver’s license and access to a reliable vehicle for business use (regular travel within the County of Essex is required)
  • Police clearance, including a vulnerable sector check, as a condition of employment.
