Job Title: Engineer/Technologist, Civil Quality Assurance

Location: Toronto, ON

Position Purpose:The overall duty of this position is to provide support to the civil construction ITP activities in compliance with client specifications, public safety acts and regulations.The location for this position is Port Hope, Ontario. The intent is to hire a term employee or a subcontractor, scheduled to work 4 days per week, 10-hour days. The duration of work will be for 20 weeks. Site security clearance is required, as well as mandatory A&D testing.Due to the nature of this position there will be on-call and overtime requirements as well as some travel. Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Review technical criteria used in the design, layout and construction of civil engineering projects.
  • Contribute effectively as a member of a project team in planning, implementing, and evaluation of ongoing project.
  • Identify phases of projects and their component activities.
  • Monitor, document and report work activity.
  • Perform quality assurance, sampling, testing, and review and update of ITP.
  • Contribute to identification and resolution of problems related to materials, scheduling, resources, and timelines to support project completion.
  • Perform quantity surveys and assist in time estimates.
  • Monitor and report deficiencies and non-compliance with project specifications.
  • Compiles, prepares, and submits daily reports and inspection reports within the associated deadlines in compliance with client, industry, company standards and policies.
  • Actively promotes and proactively models the company’s focus on safety when interacting with all current and future employees and clients.
  • Adhering to organizational policies and procedures, including but not limited to Applus Code of Ethics and Confidentiality Agreements.
  • Other duties may be assigned as deemed necessary.

Knowledge and Skills:

  • Firmly adheres to the values and ethics of Applus. Exhibits honesty, discretion, confidentiality, and sound judgment.
  • Strong working knowledge and understanding of civil concrete and steel, services and procedures.
  • Fundamental knowledge of industry codes, regulations and practices and strong reporting skills.
  • Ability to read technical documents and procedures and apply them in the field.
  • Excellent report writing and review skills.
  • Excellent customer service focus, ability to quickly build strong working relationships with business partners and colleagues.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills matched with the ability to negotiate and build relationships with key stakeholders.
  • A sense of urgency, strong attention to detail, excellent organizational and analytical skills, pragmatic, eager to learn.
  • Adapt in a high pressure and high production environment while managing competing priorities with minimal supervision.
  • Focused on continuous improvement and committed to learning new practices and developing better ways of doing things.
  • Ability to excel in a team environment.
  • Strong computer skills in MS Office and other software applications.

Education and Work Experience:

  • Bachelor of Science Degree in Civil Engineering or other approved engineering discipline from an accredited College or University desired.
  • Previous experience in general construction activities, material testing and inspection services.
  • Ability to meet company certification standards as required.
  • Valid Class 5 driver’s license.
  • Equivalent industry experience combined with other formal training and accreditations may be accepted.

Working Conditions:

  • Required to work both inside and outside in heat/cold, wet/humid and dry/arid conditions in temperature extremes and inclement weather.
  • Frequently required to use personal protective equipment to prevent exposure to hazardous materials in various working environments.
  • Commonly exposed to walking on slippery or uneven surfaces.
  • Occasionally required to work in noisy/loud working environments especially on project sites.
  • Work outside of normal business hours will be occasionally required.
  • Overtime required during the week and weekend with work volume.
  • Ability to be flexible with work schedules and respond to requests without advance warning or notification.
  • Occasional to frequent travel will be required within Canada.
  • Working conditions will vary between project locations.
