An exciting opportunity exists to showcase and grow your skills by joining our dynamic, inpatient team within the Cross Cancer Institute (CCI) as a Health Care Aide (HCA). This is an amazing opportunity for the HCA to deliver patient care throughout the cancer care continuum. As a valued HCA, you will receive direction from and collaborate with the team of health care professionals reporting to the Nurse in charge. This fast-paced, acute Inpatient environment requires the knowledge and strong communication skills necessary to promptly report patient conditions changes and needs to your team. As the successful HCA candidate, you will be a key member of a progressive team utilizing the Integrated Collaborative Practice model. You will be open to providing and receiving constructive mentorship and to coaching opportunities that strive toward providing the best in patient focused care. The CCI provides comprehensive cancer services for Edmonton and Northern Alberta with the goal to be leaders in research and best practice by using innovative technologies and collaboration that optimize patient care. In the event that no Regular Employee from this workplace expresses their interest by the deadline, the vacancy shall be filled under the provisions of the collective agreement.Description:As a Health Care Aide (HCA), you will work as a collaborative member of the multi-disciplinary team providing personal assistance including supporting activities of daily living and support services to patients (clients, residents) who require short-term assistance or ongoing support, in accordance with the patient care plan and facility policies and procedures. In this position you will work closely with patients, families, and caregivers spanning the continuum of care in home, community or health care facilities assisting nurses with the provision of routine care to meet patients’ hygiene, nutrition, mobility, recreation and safety needs, assisting with organized activities or programs and observing and reporting on a patient’s mood, health, and wellbeing. Working under a regulated health professional you will be assisting in the maintenance of a safe environment for patients, staff and visitors, and maintaining effective communication with patients and health professionals.

Required Qualifications:Completion of Health Care Aide Certificate within 18 months of hire and active directory status on the Alberta Health Care Aide Directory. Must provide a confirmation letter as proof of enrolment from the Directory at https://www.albertahcadirectory.com/health-care-aides/confirmation/. Nursing students currently enrolled in an approved Alberta nursing program who have successfully completed a minimum of 100 hours of practicum; and are either in their 1st year of practical nursing program; or 2nd year of baccalaureate nursing or psychiatric nursing program will be considered. Must attest to this compliance and provide proof of qualification. Additional Required Qualifications:Current Basic Cardiac Life Support – Health Care Provider (BCLS-HCP). Acute care experience and/or training within the past 2 years. (Students with preceptorship or practicum experience in acute care will be considered equivalent). Acute care is defined as experience and/or training on an inpatient medical or surgical unit. Must be able to assist patients with bathing, grooming, dressing and other personal hygiene activities, feeding, range of motion exercises, simple wound care, respiratory equipment use and/or urinary care. Able to perform repetitive physical duties that include walking long distances, pushing, pulling, bending, reaching above shoulder, and able to lift a minimum of 12kg. Must communicate patient condition to the nurse in a timely manner. Must be assist with safe patient transfers and other duties related to patient care. Able to work in a fast paced and unpredictable environment with frequent interruptions and distractions. Must be competent in providing care to patients newly diagnosed through the continuum of end of life. Proficient written and verbal communication skills for safe patient/family care and interdisciplinary collaboration. Exhibit a high degree of professionalism with strong time management and prioritization skills, and a demonstrated ability to function effectively within a dynamic team environment. Have a strong understanding and practices in the prevention and transmission of infection. Preferred Qualifications:Minimum one year experience within the last three years’, as a Health Care Aide. Demonstrate a commitment to and participation in professional growth.
