Applies a broad knowledge base of the healthcare environment, the science and art of nursing, educational theory and models, program/curriculum development and evaluation, organizational, teams and systems development, planned change, process consultation and research utilization to provide role modeling, leadership and consultation and to promote a positive learning culture and advance professional nursing practice.QUALIFICATIONS:Education, Training And ExperienceGraduation from a recognized nursing program or evidence of an equivalent combination of education, training and experience. Registration with BC College of Nurses and Midwives as a practicing RN registrant. Three to five years’ recent related experience, including two years’ relevant clinical experience. Reports to the Nurse Manager, Department Head or designate. This position functions as the first-line supervisor for the unit/program. The position has the on-going responsibility to coordinate the day-to-day patient care activities and the use of staff, equipment and resources for the unit/program. This position also plans and provides direct nursing care to patients/residents in the hospital or in the community in accordance with the unit/program philosophy, competency guidelines, policies and the CRNBC Standards for Nursing Practice in British Columbia. TYPICAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: 1. Functions as the first-line supervisor for the unit/program by performing supervisory activities such as making and adjusting patient assignments, scheduling and coordinating the use of staff, evaluating the work of staff, and orienting staff to the unit/program. 2. Coordinates, monitors and adjusts the day-to-day use of equipment and other resources for the unit/program; resolves related problems with staff, Manager and/or physicians. 3. Coordinates the flow of patients and patient care activities for the unit/program; resolves related problems with staff, Manager and/or physicians. 4. Contributes to the ongoing development of the nursing department and/or the unit/program by: Providing input and participating in the development and/or revision of polices and procedures and communicating these policies and procedures to unit/program staff; Participating in the development and/or modification of unit-based, departmental and/or community-based programs; Providing input to and participating in quality improvement plans/activities; Providing input into unit/program goals and objectives. 5. Certifies staff in the performance of specialized, unit specific skills by preparing, administering and grading the written and/or practical exams; signs staff education manual indicating competence in the particular skill. 6. Assesses, records and reports the health status of assigned patients/residents to identify and document patient/resident status. 7. Collaborates with the nursing team, multi-disciplinary team members, community care partners, and the patient/resident and family to develop and/or modify a patient/resident care plan, including the flow of care, to address the assessed needs of the individual. 8. Provides nursing care by performing nursing functions such as: Providing direct nursing care to patients/residents; Explaining care plan to patient/resident and family; Conducting planned nursing interventions, providing guidance and direction to other unit staff as required; Initiating measures to relieve crisis or emergent situations; Teaching self/home care skills to patient/resident and/or family members. 9. Evaluates patient/resident response to the care by assessing the effect of the nursing interventions as identified in the care plan and modifying interventions as appropriate. Initiates the multidisciplinary team evaluation of patient/resident care, including readiness for discharge. 10. Performs other related duties as assigned.
