Learn more about the opportunities we create for students, employees, and our province at bowvalleycollege.caPosition SummaryThe Manager, Healthcare Simulation and Technology is responsible for planning and implementing the programs of simulation and experiential learning, and the management and overall flow of operations in these spaces. Primary responsibilities include management of the School of Health and Wellness (SHW)’s simulation and experiential learning spaces, coordination of simulation across programs in the department, future planning, marketing, business development and planning and guiding use of the simulation and experiential learning spaces for education.The Manager will report to the Dean with responsibilities for preparation of the budget, procurement planning, consumable procurement, ensuring equipment is maintained and functional, schedule planning and supervision of the simulation technical and support staff. As a member of the management team, this position will contribute to the department’s operational and strategic planning, and act as the liaison for both internal and external stakeholders concerned/involved with simulation activities.Position responsibilities and accountabilities include but are not limited to:Simulation Planning and Implementation

  • Actively participates in planning and communications between programs and departments to coordinate simulation and experiential learning across programs.
  • Coordinates ongoing simulation processes review, evaluation, and revision to maintain relevancy, effectiveness, adherence to best practices, and connection to industry.
  • Develops and coordinates processes and guidelines to ensure quality simulation curriculum and instructional delivery of portfolio courses.
  • Proactively seeks out and makes recommendations for improvements.
  • Develops budget and monitors salary and non-salary expenses.
  • Leads the development of capital equipment purchases including Sole Sourcing and RFP development, vendor meetings and selection. Compliance with College Policies and Procedures.
  • Collaborates with faculty, reviews existing and recommends new guidelines and procedures for effective simulation activity operation and usage.
  • Ensures simulations are delivered as scheduled and are of high quality, thus meeting accreditation standards.
  • Assesses quality, safety, or staffing concerns and addresses and rectifies on a timely basis.
  • Represents the SHW Department and participates in province-wide simulation collaboration efforts and represents the College in national professional organizations.
  • Provides recommendation to the Dean and Associate Deans on developing and sustaining leading edge simulated learning experiences and spaces.
  • Knowledge of public funding structures, application processes, reporting requirements, spending rules – to assure best service to clients and compliance with funding bodies.
  • Implements a strategic plan that coordinates and aligns resources of simulation-based education activities achieve its goals.
  • In conjunction with Marketing, develops effective marketing plans to promote simulations and experiential learning opportunities, internally and externally.
  • Researches, reports on, develops and implements new business opportunities for optimizing simulated based education space utilization.
  • Establishes and maintains effective liaison with health authorities, other government and professional agencies and maintains effective working relationships with other colleges and universities.
  • Develops educational business for the College in targeted areas.
  • Manages assigned simulation and experiential learning projects or initiatives to ensure successful delivery.
  • Works closely with the SHW Department to identify current and future simulation and experiential learning.
  • Establishes a system to ensure prospective leads are followed up.
  • Explores project opportunities with external partners to generate revenue.
  • Recommends proposals to be submitted, writes proposals in compliance with terms of reference and develops budgets, contracts, (terms and conditions working closely with the Dean).
  • Secure and manage the financial resources to support stability, sustainability, and growth of the simulation-based education program’s goals and outcomes.
  • Schedules, tracks, and implements for completion; ensures that all planned activities are undertaken and within established timelines.
  • Liaise with internal groups to support Applied Research and other initiatives.
  • Leads simulation space management plan for current operations and growth opportunities.

Simulation Operations

  • Maintains records of all equipment service agreements and warranties; brings forward expiry and renewal requirements on a timely basis.
  • Maintenance of records and processes to ensure continuous high-level functioning of attendant software and hardware assets.
  • Sources supplies and equipment vendors and works with the Campus Services department on efficient and effective procurement processes.
  • Schedules simulation and experiential learning experiences.
  • Manages evergreening of all simulation equipment, including the development of life cycle planning.
  • Ensures faculty and staff have appropriate technical training and support.
  • Creates, maintains, and ensures adherence to best practices and established guidelines and procedures for all simulation activities as stated in the Simulation Handbook.
  • Creates and manages ongoing professional development in the use of simulation equipment and modalities in association with Associated Deans.
  • Develops plans to manage space, equipment, and personnel resources
  • Plans and initiates the simulation accreditation process in conjunction with internal resources.
  • Oversees the maintenance of accreditation standing and ongoing accreditations processes.
  • Acts a resource for staff in maintaining a high level of knowledge of current and evolving education technology.
  • Supports and participates in simulation research projects,
  • Creates and manages yearly operational plans
  • Collaborates with internal departments to support fund development for the College’s simulation centre.

Team Development

  • Plans for the Healthcare Simulation area, including but not limited to building a team to support the growth and support of healthcare simulation and experiential learning programs.
  • Exercises overall managerial direction of the area of responsibility with available resources for the purpose of delivering high-quality service to the College Leadership Team that advances the College’s strategic goals.
  • Provides overall supervision to the Healthcare Simulation team.
  • Recruits and hires staff to meet the changing needs of the departments.

o Writes and reviews job descriptions, recruitment action forms
o Reviews postings and interview scripts
o Shortlists candidates, establishes interviews panels
o Evaluates candidates and selects candidate to be hired

  • Responsible for the supervision, evaluation, scheduling, disciplining, performance management and motivation of direct staff to ensure optimal service is maintained:

o Providing direction and feedback for employee’s work.
o Performance appraisals on direct reports
o Identifies and takes corrective action on performance issues.
o Coaching staff, including first-level performance management conversations, on performance issues.
o Escalating and discussing performance and discipline concerns with the Dean and/or People & Culture Resources when the issues move beyond first-level performance management.
o Approves and monitors vacation and other applicable absence requests and overtime of direct reports within budget parameters.
o Develops employees in the competencies and technical requirements of their work; determines appropriate professional development; ensures that new staff are appropriately orientated and trained. Maintenance of Agresso absence reports, vacation and other absence approvals.
o Interprets and applies the terms of relevant collective agreements and represents management in responding to grievances of employees

  • Creates, maintains and monitors annual goals / deliverables for areas of responsibility accountability based on institutional strategic priorities and manages staff to successful completion of the goals.
  • Develops, manages, and monitors financial budgets for areas of responsibility, including developing business cases when needed, for the most effective use of budget dollars.
  • Manages and supervises the work of direct reports to ensure effective and consistent service. This includes having regular individual or team meetings as appropriate.
  • Exercises overall authority to assign/reassign work of employees based on operational needs to deliver on the goals of the department and the College.
  • Reviews work, as necessary, prior to distribution to stakeholders.
  • Collaborates and carries joint responsibility with the other members of the Health and Wellness leadership team to provide for effective operation of the team.
  • Ensures compliance with applicable College policy and procedure, government legislation, regulations and guidelines.
  • Investigates, leads the response to, and reports to the College’s privacy office on privacy breach incidents for areas of responsibility.
  • Proposes revisions to College procedures and gives input on revisions to College policies associated with areas of responsibility.
  • Represents the School of Health and Wellness on College and external committees as appropriate.
  • Maintains effective and positive relationships with relevant stakeholders across the College and in the community.

Required qualifications:

  • Diploma in management or related field.
  • Minimum of 4 years work experience in simulation-based education
  • High level of understanding of simulation processes and best practices
  • A combination of education and experience may be considered
  • If your education was received internationally we will require you provide an international education assessment through IQAS, WES, or one of the other nationally designated organizations upon hire
